Completing a triathlon can be one of the most rewarding experiences in sport. Training for one, however, can be one of the most challenging. It’s hard to know how much and when to focus on each of the three disciplines, especially if you’re out to crush a PR. 

 

At Trail Transformation, we offer personalized triathlon coaching for multisport athletes of all abilities. Our balanced approach to triathlon training includes pacing strategies and individualized workouts for each discipline, along with race day and equipment advice. 

 

With regular speed workouts, the infamous brick workout, easy days, and even rest days, the Trail Transformation coaches work with triathletes to make training sustainable, fun, and smart.

But training for three disciplines can feel like a tall order, especially if you’ve never attempted a triathlon before.

Our coaches work with you to design a balanced plan that meets you where you are and, as physical therapists, address the unique mobility and musculoskeletal demands of triathlon training. Triathlon FAQs

How long does it take to train for a triathlon?


The amount of time it takes to train for a triathlon depends on an athlete’s training background, history of injury, and current level of fitness, as well as the distance of the event. For an Ironman distance, training could take 4–6 months. For a shorter sprint event, training could take 2–3 months.




Do I need to strength train for a triathlon?


Yes, we generally recommend strength training for a triathlon. Like all strength training, yourplan should be tailored to your training background, injury history, overall health, and goals.




Do I have to be a good runner to train for a triathlon?


The beauty of triathlons is that there is always a discipline to improve on. Most triathletes are strongest in one discipline; however, that discipline does not need to be running! By nature, triathlons offer variety in training; it’s important to work on all aspects of each discipline.




Will training for a triathlon take over my life?


Training for a triathlon can be a lot of work. But it does not have to take over your life. At Trail Transformation, we create training plans that fit your life and your goals. We work with you to set the balance.




You are running coaches, so what do you know about triathlons?


Coach Pat ( USAT level 1 and 2 certifications) has been competing in triathlons for over 10 years with racing experience in all distances from sprint to Ironman triathlons.To date, he has successfully worked with triathletes starting on their first sprint distance to multiple athletes qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona.
