Trail Running FAQs

What is trail running?

Trail running is simply running in nature, usually on a non paved surface. Trail running is not just running in mountains or in remote location, trail running can happen at your local park or at your favorite state park. Always check local trail guidance to know before you go- and be respectful of bikers, animals and others.

Is trail running harder than road running?

Nope. But it is more adventurous! Road running is usually on a packed even surface. Trail running is on uneven surfaces, with dirt, rocks and roots. When trail running you have to pay attention to your feet a but more, and given the uneven terrain, an athlete might even run slower.

Is trail running safe?

Yes! It is important to use common sense when running trails - just as you would with running roads. Let a friend / partner know where you are going, have your phone and know your route in advance. If you are running in mountains or remote areas, there are specific safety precautions we encourage you to take that could be specific to that trail. Always ask a coach, other trail runner or local if you planning to hit a new unknown trail.

Does trail running mean I have to run an ultra?

No. Many athletes use trails to supplement road running, other athletes are training for 5K or 10K trail races. There is no distance requirement for trail running or trail racing. And you can run trails just for the sheer joy of being in nature without training for anything. Trust us, we do it all the time.

Do I need special shoes?

Generally, yes, we recommend trail shoes. Much like finding the right road shoe, finding the right trail shoe can take some experimentation. And just like road shoes, trail shoes can vary in weight, sole, responsiveness and drop. We can help you get started with recommendations on shoes and/or stores

The Trail Transformation Difference

Many of the Trail Transformation Coaches are also trail runners. So this focus of coaching is one that is particularly fun for us. Our coaches enjoy helping newer trail runners figure out gear and seasoned trailblazers push their limits. We’ve often heard newer trail runners say how welcoming the trail running community is. We have to agree! But we also understand that trying something new can be intimidating, so we are here to help! With a customized trail running program, we can help you run your first few trial miles, figure out gear and even point you towards a few favorite trails. If you are looking to crush your next trail race, we got you covered with coaches who know what it takes to lead the pack. And if an ultra distances race is your jam, we got you covered there too.
